In Baghdad, October 2010, 58 people were kill ed in Our Lady of Salvation Catholic Church.

In Baghdad, October 2011, Annet Henneman held rehearsals for a new theatre reportage: Voices o f Baghdad.

Voices of Baghdad: those of Ali, Yasir, Fouad and Mus tafa. The violence hasn’t stopped in their city, attacks against Chri stians, Muslims, soldiers, civilians… Four young actors who tell of the reality they are living in this city that still knows no peace.  & nbsp;

From the 27th to 30th October, they will be among over thi rty performers, writers, artists, journalists, directors and musicians from Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Turkey, Kurdistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Spai n, Holland and the UK who will be bringing their voices and the voices of t hose who have no voice, but who live through conflict, through oppression a nd imprisonment, through poverty.

I am attaching a provisional p rogramme of the stream of meetings and exchanges, of performances, concerts , exhibitions and conferences to which are coming: Iman Aoun (Director of A shtar Theatre from Ramallah, Palestine and director of the world-travelled production The Gaza Monologues); Savas Boyraz (Kurdish photographer from Tu rkey whose exhibition documents the life now led by those who had to flee t heir burning villages); Selwa Zako (a 75-year-old award-winning (press free dom prize by Information Safety Freedom) journalist from Iraq now living as a refugee in Amman, Jordan); Roberto Bacci (founder and director of Fondaz ione Pontedera Teatro and Teatro Era); Farqin Azad and Cafer Akarsu (renown ed Kurdish singer and member of the group Koma Azad, and the youngest Dengb ej singer in Turkish Kurdistan); Mehdi Zana (former mayor of Diyarbakir, Tu rkish Kurdistan; imprisoned and tortured for many years in Turkey, author o f Prison No. 5); Mahmoud Badr (a young Egyptian actor whose account of the demonstrations and of his arrest he is currently telling in a monologue per formed across Egypy); Mohammed Al Ma’aita (a young Palestinian poet l iving in Amman); Khyam Allami (renowned Iraqi oud-player and composer); Ana Alvarez (film and television director, Goya award-winner and member of the Academia del Cine Español); the group of London students performing Iran: Forgotten Stories to shout the cries of protesters who for doing so in Iran risk unknown abuse for themselves and those closest to them behind the bars of Evin Prison.

Godert van den Berg (Holland): The account of an aca demy of idealistic foundations, started in the form of a collective, an aca demy for experimental drama teachers with no funding whatsoever, which was later officially recognised by the Dutch state and became The Academy of Ex pression and Communication (AVEK). Amongst others, Godert van den Berg was its founder. There will be several people who formerly tudied at this acade my coming from Holland, who will share certain demonstrations and examples of the work: Godert, Corrie Hiwat, Marius Broeders, Fred Geerlings and Mari e José Boon. Then there will also be Annet Henneman, who herself stu died there and gained her diploma which today is recognised as a Bachelor o f Arts.

Roberto Bacci (Italy): Memories of times gone by: he wil l tell of how he brought to Volterra the third theatre ISTA (International School of Theatre Anthropology) of Eugenio Barba; of Grotowski; of the thea tre festival of Volterra; of the film Azioni nella Città (Actions in the city), along with some of Volterra’s citizens and maybe Mirella Schino or Nando Taviani.

The Charta of Volterra: Interviews, so me of them dramatised, with Alessandra Ballerini, a lawyer specialised in r efugee law who spent part of this summer working in Lampedusa, and Stefano Galieni, a journalist dedicated to the plight and struggles of refugees and immigrants in Italy.

Iman Aoun (Palestine/Yemen):  Directo r and actress of Ashtar Theatre in Ramallah, Palestine, she is also the fou nder of the 3-year course in Social Theatre at the University of Yemen. She will be bringing with her the documentary The Gaza Monologues, which tells the stories belonging to the children and young people who have lived thro ugh the conflict in Gaza. She will arrive on the 25th September, and leave on the 28th, showing the documentary to the group of young actors and perfo rmers and sharing with them her methods of work.

Mahmoud Badr (E gypt): a young Egyptian actor and will perform a short monologue to tell of his experiences in the demonstrations and in prison during the Egyptian sp ring. He will also take part in the training, rehearsals and actions of the atre reportage over the weekend.

Ali Kaream Obaid, Yasir Kaream Yasir, Fouad Hanoon Hadi, Mustafa Rahman Issa Lami (Iraq):  These youn g actors are working from 27th September to 9th October under the direction of Annet Henneman on the theatre reportage Voices of Baghdad in Baghdad. A fter an open rehearsal in Baghdad, the first performance will be in Erbil ( Iraqi Kurdistan) as part of the Iraqi Civil Society Solidarity Initiative c onference on 8th October. The actors will then come to Volterra, arriving o n 20th October to begin a short tour, beginning with Incontri-Meetings. The show is already booked for performances in Florence, Pisa, Volterra and Po marance for the schools.

Selwa Zako (Iraq/Jordan): An Iraqi jour nalist, Christian by birth and a communist now over 75 years of age. After the war in Iraq she was threatened with death and so was unable to remain i n Baghdad. Awarded the press freedom prize a few years ago by Information S afety Freedom, she is now living in great (but dignified) difficulty in Amm an, trying to survive by working as a translator.

Amal Ershaid ( Jordan): An actress in the theatre reportage on refugees directed by Annet Henneman in the International Theatre Festival of Amman in November 2010. D uring the festival, she was also acting in show by an Iraqi director. She w ill be writing an article in Arabic on Meetings-Incontri and will participa te in the training, rehearsals and actions of theatre reportage over the we ekend.

Mohammad Jawdat Faris Al Ma'aitah (Palestine/Jordan): A young Palestinian poet who acted in the performance Heaven and Hell: Sto ries of Life in Palestine, and in the performance on refugees in the Intern ational Theatre Festival of Amman. He brings hi s poetry with him, to the s treets, wherever he goes, sometimes accompanying it with the oud (Arabic lu te). He will also be participating in the training, rehearsals and actions of theatre reportage throughout the weekend.

Savas Boyraz (Istan bul, Turkey/Sweden): Kurdish photographer who documents through his photogr aphy those who have fled from burnt villages and who are now struggling to survive in the city of Diyarbakir in Turkish Kurdistan.

Mehdi Za na (Turkish Kurdistan/Sweden): Former mayor of Diyarbakir, imprisoned for o ver a decade for attempting to improve the political rights and situation o f his people, the Kurds (just as, in the years following his release, his w ife Leyla Zana was arrested and served 9 years for having declared the fina l oath as she was sworn in as an elected member of parliament in Kurdish). He also took part in Teatro di Nascosto’s performance Rifugiati in Ro me and Milan. As a result he was no longer able to travel and had to flee i mmediately back to Sweden where he has citizenship. He will talk about the situation of his people in Turkey today.

Dana Abbas (Iraqi Kurdi stan/London, UK): Dana has for many years been a faithful associate of Teat ro di Nascosto, from the first encounter in Tehran until today, participati ng in various performances, sharing with Annet his culture in particular it s music and also offering his practical and technical assistance. He will t alk about the current situation of Iraqi Kurdistan and will hopefully bring with him to share some of his favourite music and a documentary.

Ana Martinez (Spain):  Member of the Spanish cinema academy and Goya Award-winning film maker and television director, Ana Martinez  will share some of her documentaries and short films*, which focus on the life a nd difficulties faced by women. (* La pasiòn di vivir, María, 25’ sul parte naturale, Penalty and Trousers)

Graziano Pa cini (Italy):  -on behalf of the Tavolo per la Pace della Val di Cecin a, which represents 13 communities, and which is working in tight collabora tion with efforts and projects to counter violence in Iraq and in the Middl e East in general. The Tavolo will be bringing a film on the Sahrawi, which will be screened in the cinema of Volterra.

Information Safety Freedom: Stefano Marcelli (RAI Mediterraneo [Italian media]) and Stefano Ne ri (Director of Information Safety Freedom). This organisation reports thro ugh its website, in books and articles, on the difficulties confronted by j ournalists in every country of the world, the censorship of the internet an d mass media, on journalists who risk their lives, who risk prison and tort ure for their work. The question to be addressed in discussion with this or ganisation is how to gain greater visibility for the work of Teatro di Nasc osto, and in general for all journalists in these situations. Participants:   Selwa Zako, Stefano Galieni, Annet Henneman, Ana Martinez, Fred Geer ling, Savas Boyraz, Venus Faiq as well as other journalists and documentary -makers.

‘Tè di Nascosto’: A group of ladies, most of whom Romanian, who since early this year have been meeting every M onday afternoon at Teatro di Nascosto’s previous venue in Volterra. T hey will share with the town a few songs (Lumi), with the accompaniment of David Dainelli, Aldo Martolini and others, and dances involving the whole g roup of performers…

Khyam Allami (Baghdad, Iraq/London, U K): Renowned oud player, recipient of BBC Radio 3 scholarship and performer at the BBC Proms in 2010, is currently working with the Royal Shakespeare Company, devising the musical accompaniment to their new version of the Mar at/Sade.

Farqin Azad and Cafer Akarsu (Turkish Kurdistan): Two d engbej singers who, true to the old tradition, tell true stories through so ng – a culture that is disappearing. Farqin is well known as a member of the band Koma Azad famous for their live and televised performances.

Venus Faiq (Iraqi Kurdistan/Holland): Journalist, writer, employee of NRT TV in Suleymania when it was attacked and burnt down in February 20 11. She has now returned to live in Holland.

Mohammed Mustafa (P alestine/Finland/Jordan): Young graphic designer and actor who will be reco rding the event through film, interviews and photos.

Ismaeel Dae wood and Martina Pignatt (Baghdad, Iraq/Italy): Amongst others in Baghdad, he is responsible for having set up the movement against violence: LAONF. H e now lives in Pisa and is working with Un Ponte Per…on its Library project, which aims to retrieve and salvage books lost and damaged during t he war, as well as its work with LAONF.  He will be reading some of th e poetry retrieved from Baghdad.


Refugees: Nur Mohamed Yam shedi and other refugees currently in Volterra (various/Italy): Many of who m have already been involved with Teatro di Nascosto, they will share their various stories.

Teatro di Nascosto in London: Valentina Zagari a (London. UK/Italy), Arabella Lawson (London, UK), Pascale Porcheron (Lond on/UK), Valera Simonchuk (London/Ukraine) Guendalina Simoncini (Spain/Italy ): Actors in the theatre reportage Iran: Forgotten Stories, performed in Lo ndon July 2011.  Arabella will be helping with organisation from 10th October; Valentina and Guendolina will be there from 20th October. They wil l all then be preparing for the theatre reportage actions as well as the or ganisation of the event.

Actions dans la ville: Once upon a time in Volterra t here existed the international theatre group l’Avventura. This docume ntary will show one of their projects: Actions dans la ville.

Ar na’s Children: The Freedom Theatre in the refugee camp in Jenin, Pale stine. One lady goes ahead with her project in spite of the cancer from whi ch she is suffering… She is no longer there, nor her son, Juliano Me r Khamis, who died in April this year, following an attack in front of the theatre that had continued after his mother’s death.

Auction: Started on the last evenin g organised in Teatro di Nascosto’s former venue, which proved to be an occasion of great entertainment, the auction will be continued to raise money for the theatre and to sell off the substantial remainder of beautifu l donations!

Voices of Bagh dad: Theatre reportage developed in Baghdad with four young actors (see abo ve) under the direction of Annet Henneman: Memories both old and recent of a city in war and in its aftermath.

Iran: Forgotten Stories: Pre miered on 23rd July this year at SOAS University in London: No-one had talk ed about Iran since its own ‘spring’ of 2009, brutally represse d. These are stories of demonstrations that did not end well, of some of th e women in the prisons of Iran from far in the past and from today, and&hel lip;of the parties that happen in secret, illegally, in spite of the rules. .   

Bashir’s Kite: Theatre reportage by Gianni Calastri on the life and poetry of Bashir Ahmadi, a political refugee from Afghanistan. He will share the hidden life of one of the many refugees who live and work in our countries: a past as a teacher in Afghanistan, a passi on for poetry, the Russian occupation, his flight from the Taliban and his present, anonymous in a huge stockroom.

Don’t Forget Us: Songs and stories from Kurdistan, Palestine, Baghdad, Iran, Holland, South America… Each song will be introduced by a short story of the real l ives of the people through whom, by whom and for whom these songs were lear nt, songs from many years of travelling and making theatre reportage. This performance is in response to the request made by every person, every peopl e, every situation encountered: Don’t forget us…With Massimo C arli playing live music with the Bengalese violin.
(This is currently touring through the houses, theatre and public squares of Italy (Volterra, Siena, Casale Marittima, Donosratico, Lecco, Milano, Roma), Holland (Novemb er), England (July), Kurdistan and Baghdad (September/October).

Theatre reportag e and psychiatry (Antonella Pitanti): Italian neuro-psychiatrist, Antonella Pitanti will be relating her field of work to the work of Teatro di Nascos to.

A thesis on Theatre Reportage: Valentina Zagaria will be pre senting her thesis on the work of Teatro di Nascosto written for her degree in Anthropology at Cambridge University, UK.

Masters in Theatre Reportage in Volterra: Presentation of the project still in the process of elaboration, with Giuseppe Furlanis (president of the national council for higher education in the arts and music), Monica Vanucci (director of the d ance department) and councillors from the provincial and regional governmen t.



Workshop: With all performers coming from Baghda d, Jordan, Palestine, Spain and London, preparation for actions of theatre reportage.

I ncontri – Meetings

Godert van den Berg: racconto di un Acc ademia iniziato per idealismo nella forma di un colletivo, accademia  per insegnanti dramma sperimentata senza alcun sostegno finanziario, poi di ventata una Accademia ufficiale riconosciuta dallo stato olandese: Accademi a per Espressione e Communicazione (AVEK). Insieme ad altri ne è sta to il fondatore. Ci saranno 4 persone che tanto tempo fa ci hanno studiato lungo tempo fa con quelche dimostrazione e esempio, tutti vengono apposto d all’Olanda. (Godert, Corrie Hiwat, Marius Broeders, Fred Geerlings. M arie José Boon e poi ci sarò anche io, anche io ho studiato p reso il diploma lì, che oggi si traduci in un Bachelor of Art.

Roberto Bacci: ricordi... si parla di tempi lontani, come ha portato a Volterra il terzo teatro l'Ista di Eugenio Barba, Grotowski, il festi val Volterra Teatro, insieme a persone di Volterra (e parlo con lui se port a qualcuno spero domani o dopo domani per parlarne) e alcuni Volterrani, fi lm Azioni nella Città e altro), per esempio con la Mirella Schino o Nando Taviani.

La Charta di Volterra: interventi teatralizzati e non, con Alessandra Ballerini avvocato specializzato in materia di rifugia ti che ha lavorato una parte dell'estate a Lampedusa e Stefano Galieni giornalista che si occupa continuamente di rifugiati ed immigranti e le lor o situazioni difficili in Italia.

Iman Aoun, regista e attrice d i Ashtar Theatre in Ramallah, Palestina, fondatrice del corso triennale di teatro sociale all’Università di Yemen. Porterà il docu mentario:” The Gaza Monologues”, un spettacolo che racconta le storie raccolte di giovani e bambini che hanno vissuto la guerra in Gaza. V errà il 25 e partirà il 28, mostrando il documentario ai giov ani attori, il gruppo di preparazione condividendo il metodo di lavoro.

Tutti attori, artisti giovani partecipanti arrivano intorno al 20 o ttobre per poi preparare tutti insieme il weekend

Mahmoud Badr ( Egitto) giovane attore con un monologo corte sulla sua esperienza del carce re, primavera egiziana e partecipa alle prove e le azioni di teatro reporta ge durante il weekend.

Ali Kareem Obaid, Yasir Kareem Yasir, Fou ad Hanoon Hadi, Mustafa Rahman Issa Lami (Iraq), giovani attori lavoreranno sotto la regia di Annet Henneman per  il teatro reportage "Voci da Baghdad" (27 settmemre – 9 ottobre) a Baghdad. Dopo una prova aperta a Baghdad la prima sarà ad Erbil (Kurdistan iracheno)  nell'incontro con la conferenza con La Società Civile di Solidar ietà, 8 ottobre. Poi gli attori si sposteranno a Volterra (20 ottobr e) per iniziare un piccolo tournée iniziando nel programma: Incontri – Meetings. Per lo spettacolo ci sono già prenotazioni per Fi renze, Pisa, Volterra e Pomarance  per le scuole.

Salwa Za ko (Iraq/ Giordania),  giornalista, communista, nata cristiana intorno ai 76 anni. Dopo la guerra in Iraq è stata minacciata di morte e no n è potuto rimanere a Baghdad. Premiata da Information Safety Freedo m alcuni anni fa e adesso vivendo in grande (dignitosa) difficoltà, cercando di sopravvivere con traduzioni.

Amal Ershaid (Giordani a), attrice al teatro reportage su rifugiati sotto la mia regia nel Festiva l Internazionale di Teatro ad Amman, novembre scorso, durante il festival e ra anche attrice nello spettacolo di un regista iracheno. Scriverà u n’articolo in Arabo su Meetings - Incontri e partecipa alle prove e l e azioni di teatro reportage durante il weekend.

Mohammad Jawdat Faris Alma'aitah (Palestina, Giordania), giovane palestinese, poeta, e partecipante come attore allo spettacolo: Inverno paradiso, racconti di vi ta palestinese…” e nello spettacolo su rifugiati nello festiva l di teatro internazionale ad Amman. Porta le sue poesie anche per strada, dappertutto, a volte accompagnato da oud. (liuto arabo). Partecipa alle pro ve e le azioni di teatro reportage durante il weekend.


Sav as Boyraz (Turchia Istanbul/Svezia): fotografo curdo che documenta con le s ue foto le persone scappate dai villaggi bruciati e che vivono adesso in un a situazione difficile, di sopravvivenza nella città di Diyarbakir d el Kurdistan turco

Mehdi Zana (Kurdustan turco/Svezia): una volt a sindaco di Diyarbakir, in prigione per lunghi (11?) anni perché st ava cercando politicamente (come dopo la sua moglie Leyla Zana che ha fatto 9 anni di prigione per aver giurata, come parlamentare eletta, dopo il tur co, in curdo) di migliorare la situazione del suo popolo: il popolo curdo. Ha fatto parte del mio spettacolo: Rifu-giati  a Roma, Milano e poi no n ha più potuto viaggiare e ha dovuto scappare un'altra volta in Svezia, paese della quale ha la nazionalità. Parlerà della s ituazione del suo popolo in Turchia oggi.

Dana Abbas (Kurdistan iracheno/Londra): è stato per lunghi anni un collaboratore fedele de l teatro di nascosto, dal primo incontro a Tehran fino ad oggi, partecipand o a diversi spettacoli, condividendo con me canti, la sua cultura, la sua m usica tutto, ma anche sostendo, aiutando con cose pratiche. Parlerà del Kurdistan iracheno di oggi e vorrei che si portasse la musica che ama ( bellissimo) e un documentario.

Ana Martinez (Spagna): parte dell ’Accademia di Cinema Spagnola (Premio Goya), film maker e regista di televsione. Mostra nei suoi documentari temi intorno alla vita e i problemi particolari che vivono le donne. Porterà alcuni documentary/corto m etraggi: (La pasión de vivir, María, 25' sul parto natura le) PENALTY and TROUSERS (Pantaloni)

Graziano Pacini (Italia): p er Il Tavolo per la Pace della Val di Cecina che rappresenta 13 municipalit à, e con il quale c’è una forte collaborazione per i pr ogetti contro la violenza in Iraq, medioriente, in generale. Una collaboraz ione di intenzione, di sostegno. Il tavolo porta per le scuole un film sui Sahrawi, il venerdì mattina credo (da definire), in collaborazione c on primo piano, che si svolgerà nel cinema di Volterra

In formation Safety Freedom: Stefano Marcelli (RAI mediterraneo), Stefano Neri (direttore Information Safety Freedom).  L’organizzazione racco nta sul website e tramite articoli e libri, di situazioni difficili dei gio rnalisti in tutti paesi del mondo, di censura su websites e mass media, di giornalisti che rischiano la vita, la prigione, tortura, per il lavoro che fanno. Con questa organizzazione si tratta l’argomento: Come si pu&og rave; dare più visibilità al lavoro del teatro di nascosto e più in generale ai giornalisti in questi situazioni. Parteciperanno: Selwa Zako, Stefano Galieni, Annet Henneman, Ana Martinez, Fred Geerling, Savas Boyraz, Venus Faiq e altri giornalisti, documentaristi,

I l Tè di Nascosto:  un gruppo di donne rumene per la maggior par te, che si sta incontrando da gennaio, o febbraio di questo anno. Si aprira no alla città con alcuni canti (Lumi) accompagnata da David Dainelli , Aldo Martolini e altri, e balli con tutto il gruppo …

Khyam Allami (Baghdad, London):
Musicista premiato da BBC3, specializa to in oud, accompagna Shakespeare Company per la musica per la loro version e del Marat Sade

Yilmaz Dunen, in arte Farqin e Cafer Akarsu (K urdistan turco), due cantanti dengbej, la cultura orale che racconta storie veramente successe tramite canto. Una cultura che si sta perdendon. Il can tante Farqin è ben conosciuto come membro di Koma Azad, con concerti anche in televisione.

Venus Faiq (Kurdistan iracheno, Olanda), giornalista, scrittrice, lavorava al NRT tv in Suleymania quando è s tato attaccato e bruciato. Adesso è ritornata a vivere in Olanda.

Mohammed Mustafa (Palestina, Finlandia, Giordania) giovane grafico / attore che documenterà tutto l’evento con la camera, intervi ste, foto.

Ismaeel Daewood: ha iniziato insieme ad alcuni altri a Baghdad il movimento contro la violenza: LAONF. Adesso vive a Pisa, colla bora con Un Ponte Per… per il progetto della libreria che cerca di s alvare, ritrovare, libri danneggiati, persi durante la guerra e per il prog etto Laonf. Leggerà alcune delle poesie antiche salvate.


Rifugiati: Nur Mohammed Yakshedi, alcuni rifugiati attuali di Volterr a. Già un giovane ha collaborato all’asta, credo che cercher&o grave; di coinvolgerlo attivamente. Ho un rapporto buono con loro perch&eac ute; mi sono impegnata diverse volte per incontri, necessità, avvoca to ecc.

Tutti s ono attori del teatro reportage “Onda Verde”. Arabella Lawson a rriverà il 10 e collaborerà per l’organizzazione. Il 20 arriveranno tutti per preparare le azioni che si vogliono svolgere durante il weekend e per l’organizzazione.

Arna’s Children: Freedom theatre nel campo dei rifu giati in Jenin, Palestina. Una donna straordinaria va avanti con il suo pro getto anche ammalata di cancro… Lei adesso non c’è pi&u grave;, né suo figlio Juliano Mer Khami, che è stato ucciso d avanti al teatro che ha continuato dopo la morte di sua madre.

Asta: iniziato come ultima serata nello vecchio spazio pe r trovare soldi e stare insieme, è stato un evento molto bello e pia cevole, si continuerà nel nuovo spazio, momento da definire, perch&e acute; siamo riusciti solo ad arrivare ad una piccola parte delle cose da m ettere in asta!

“Iran, storie dimensticate”
Prima 23 luglio di questo anno all SOAS University di Londra: non si parl a dell’Iran, della loro primavera di un anno fa, oppressa. Storie di una dimostrazione finita male, di donne imprigionate, nel lontano passato e oggi. La fine: una festa privata a Tehran… La vita privata, fin qua ndo nascosta per bene, è la vita come ognuno la vuole… finch& eacute; non si viene scoperto, si può fare quello che si vuole.

“L’Aquilone di Bashir”
Teatro-reportage di e con Gianni Calastri sulla vita e le poesie di Bashir Ahmadi, rifugiato poli tico afgano. Farà conoscere la vita nascosta di uno dei tanti rifugi ati che vivono e lavorano nel nostro paese, un passato da insegnante in Afg hanistan, la sua passione per la poesia, l’occupazione russa, la fuga dai talebani e il presente in Italia nell’anonimato di un grande mag azzino.
