Now in its eighth year, the Bristol Palestine Film Fest ival is back this December with an amazing range of fictional features, doc umentaries and short films.

Surprising, moving, tragic or funny , these films bring audiences new and unexpected insights into the lives of ordinary people living in extraordinary circumstances, and have been chose n to provoke deep thought and discussion. We are delighted to welcome guest filmmakers and commentators who add contextual depth to the programme, inc luding: Ramallah-based director, Muayad Alayan; co-founder of Medical Aid f or Palestinians, Dr Swee Ang; and internationally renowned playwright, Davi d Hare.

Tuesday 4th December – The Palestine Museum
 
Gaza Surf Club is a documentary show ing at Bristol's Palestine Museum at 7.30pm on Tuesday 3rd December. In thi s ravishing film we meet the surfers of Gaza, a group of young men and wome n who find their freedom in the waves of the Mediterranean, away from the d epressing reality of living under blockade in “the world’s biggest open air prison”. The museum cafe will be open prior to the screening serving authe ntic vegetarian Palestinian food.

Naila and the Uprising
Wednesday 5th December – The Pales tine Museum

The second film of the festival is a docume ntary showing at the Palestine Museum at 7.30pm on Wednesday 5th December. When a nationwide uprising breaks out in 1987 in Gaza, Naila Ayesh must mak e a choice between love, family and freedom. Undaunted, she embraces all th ree, joining the vibrant, nonviolent mobilisation of the First Intifada. Ticket will be available on the door, £6 standard and £3 concession.

Wednes day 5th December – Windmill pub

In Between, will be sho wn at The Windmill pub in Bedminster at 7.30pm on Wednesday 5th December. T his empowering film follows the lives of three strong Palestinian women in Tel Aviv, aspiring to lead independent lives, away from their families whil st 'in-between' the restrictions imposed on them by their country.

Wall
Thursday 6th December – W atershed

On Thursday 6th December at 6.30pm, the star o f Wall, two-time Oscar nominee, David Hare, joins us for a screening and Q& A at Watershed. The film is an animated documentary, exploring the impact t hat the wall separating Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories has had on the people in the region. Rich with rhythmic, raw imagery, the film is framed by Hare’s journey, as both his heart and mind are shaken by the incongruities and contradictions of life in the shadow of the wall.

T he Reports on Sarah and Saleem
Friday 7 December – Wa tershed

Then at 8.30pm on Friday 7th December at Water shed, a film following Sarah, an Israeli who runs a café in West Jerusalem, and Saleem, a Palestinian from East Jerusalem who works as a deliveryman. Despite being worlds apart, Sarah and Saleem risk everything as they embark on an illicit affair that could tear apart their unsuspecting respective f amilies. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with the Director, Mu ayad Alayan.

The Insult
Saturday 8th December – Watershed

Watershed will be screening Oscar-nominated, The Insult on Satu rday 8th December at 5.30pm. In today’s Beirut, an insult blown out of prop ortions finds Toni, a Lebanese Christian, and Yasser, a Palestinian refugee , facing off in court, as all around the case threatens a social explosion in divided Lebanon.

The Cube, will b e screening Wajib at 8pm on Saturday 8th December. Wajib follows Shadi as h e returns to Nazareth for his sister’s wedding and despite a strained relat ionship, agrees to help his father hand-deliver the invitations to each gue st, as per local Palestinian custom. The film will be followed by a pre-rec orded Q&A with the Director, Annemarie Jacir. This beautifully observed com edy drama about the simmering tension between father and son has won multip le awards.

Kill ing Gaza
Sunday 9th December – Watershed
Killing Gaza, screening at 2.40pm on Sunday 9th December at Water shed is a documentary on Israel’s 2014 assault on Gaza. Independent journal ists, Max Blumenthal and Dan Cohen, turned a camera onto the survivors to l et them speak for themselves and tell their acts of creative resistance. Af ter the film there will be a talk by Dr Swee Ang, co-founder of the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians.

What Walaa Wants

What Walaa Wants is a documentary screening at 5.40pm at Watershed on Sunday 9th December. Raised in a West Bank refug ee camp while her mother was in prison, Walaa is determined to be a policew oman on the Palestinian Security Forces. This intimate documentary follows Walaa from aged 15 to 21, revealing the exuberant energy of its subject and a first-ever look inside the Palestinian police academy.

The final film of Bristol Palestine Film Festival will be Tel Aviv on F ire, screening at The Cube, at 8pm on Sunday 9th December. The comedy follo ws Salam, an intern on a popular Palestinian soap opera. Arrested at a chec kpoint, he deceives Israeli commander Assi, into thinking that he is a writ er on the show. Squeezed between the Israeli officer and the Palestinian ba ckers, Salam can only solve his problems with a final masterstroke.

HISTORY OF THE FESTIVA L
The first Bristol Palestine Film Festival was held in 2011, launched by the acclaimed film-maker Ken Loach, who remains the festival’s patron. Since then, the event has screened more than 50 films and welcomed more than 2,000 attenders. Hosted by the Watershed, the aim of the festiva l is to deepen public understanding of Palestinian society and forge links between the Palestinian communities represented on screen, and the audience s watching them in Bristol.
