La data è stata scelta per il suo significato per il popolo palestinese:  il 29 novembre del 1947 fu approvata dall’Assemblea Ge nerale la Risoluzione 181 che prevedeva il Piano di partizione della Palest ina elaborato dal Comitato Speciale dell’ONU sulla Palestina (UNSCOP).\n\nT ale Risoluzione definiva l’istituzione di uno Stato ebraico e di uno Stato arabo in Palestina, con Gerusalemme come corpus separatum sotto un regime i nternazionale speciale. Dei due Stati previsti, solamente quello di Israele è stato creato. Il popolo palestinese, che ora conta più di otto milioni d i persone, vive principalmente nel territorio palestinese (occupato da Isra ele dal 1967), inclusa Gerusalemme Est, in Israele, nei vicini Stati arabi e nei campi profughi della regione.\n\nIl 29 novembre di quest’anno segna 5 0 anni dall’inizio della guerra arabo-israeliana del 1967, che ha provocato l’occupazione israeliana della Cisgiordania, di Gerusalemme Est, di Gaza e del Golan siriano e lo sfollamento di centinaia di migliaia di palestinesi e siriani.\n\nCon questa giornata si vuole ricordare alla comunità interna zionale che la questione della Palestina è ancora irrisolta e che il popolo palestinese deve poter godere di quei diritti inalienabili che l’Assemblea Generale ha definito: il diritto all’autodeterminazione senza interferenze esterne, il diritto all’indipendenza e alla sovranità nazionale, e il diri tto a fare ritorno alle case e proprietà che i palestinesi hanno dovuto abb andonare. In occasione della giornata, istituzioni governative ed organizza zioni della società esprimono la loro solidarietà verso il popolo palestine se attraverso messaggi, incontri ed eventi di sensibilizzazione.\n\nOgni an no il Comitato per l’esercizio dei diritti inalienabili del popolo palestin ese organizza un incontro speciale presso la sede delle Nazioni Unite di Ne w York.  Tra i relatori il Segretario Generale dell’ONU, il Presidente dell ’Assemblea Generale, rappresentanti di vari organismi, delle organizzazioni intergovernative e della Palestina.
